Grandchildren Keep Me Busy

It is the month of May 1979. I'm kept busy going to eighth grade, high school and college graduations. There are also engagement showers and weddings for the older grandchildren. I have four married grandchildren. None of them have any children yet. They want to save some money first. When I'm dressed and go to the different affairs they all say I look young for my age. Of course, that makes me feel good. All the young people around me help me stay young. I also have nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who invite me to their weddings and different affairs. I love them all for remembering me. Some of these nieces and nephews are really very good to me. They say every one should have an Aunt Mary like me. Many of them used to spend time at my home during school vacations. I always lived in the country, with acres of land, big trees, a large garden and yard. All kinds of animals we had, like a miniature zoo. I always loved children. I gave them goodies during the day. It is wonderful they remember that far back.

Laura's parents gave her a big party for her First Holy Communion. There were about 60 of us there. Laura looked like a little Angel. She thanked everyone for coming to her party and for the lovely gifts that she received. She received a Bible, some story books, lockets, bracelets, clothes and over $100. She would call to her mother and say, “Oh, Mom, I got more money. I'm going to get rich.” She also received a new wallet. She stuffed the money in it.

Laura's sisters were very happy for her. Dino and Phyl worked hard to get ready for this party. Phyl made two huge white cakes with cream and strawberries. They were larger than what you can buy in a bakery. They also had fresh strawberries in a large bowl, homemade bows and other cookies, cheese and crackers and a large tray of Italian sweets. It was like a wedding. In the evening, after they cleared the table off, about 35 of us had hard rolls, all kinds of cold cuts and salads.
