Tony and Tony
After we sold the place, we gave Tony $10,000 and John
$8,050, because he had stopped working for his father a few years earlier than
Tony. We gave the three girls about $1,500 each. We had a key man insurance on
Tony and John. We paid the premiums. When we sold our business we could trade
them in and get a little over $3,000 each. We decided to give them to our sons.
They used the dividends to continue the insurance. We have been very generous
to our children and they love us for it.
We wanted Tony to go to an advanced school of
accounting in Hackensack. When we told Tony, his answer was, I could never
stay closed in an office all day. It would kill me. I love the out-of-doors,
like my father does.
Tony bought a new truck and went into the landscaping
business. He also helped his father with the smaller greenhouse business. The
two small greenhouses were supposed to be a hobby for my husband, but in time
it grew to be bigger than a hobby. He also planted a nursery. We had a very
large garden, with tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, carrots, lettuce, swiss chard
and many other kinds of vegetables and small flower plants.
After supper we would go in the garden and pick
tomatoes and other vegetables, clean them, put them in baskets and the next day
Tony would deliver them to the roadside stands. Hard work was never finished.
It gave us extra money.
