Title: Excel algorithm
Post by: boccuz on October 22, 2012, 09:15:50 PM
Hi,

I am trying to create a round-robin table in excel where the matches change depending on the number of players.  This is for a golf league where we play 18 weeks.  there are 20 golfers.  we play individual golfers so there are 10 matches per week.  I setup an excel spreadsheet with the weeks 1 through 18 across the top and the 1 through 20 vertically representing the golfers.  I have the the have the numbers 1-20 rotating successfully.  I am close but need a little help.  I will be happy to send the spreadsheet

Have you looked at this Excel workbook?  It generates complete round-robins, but for your 20 golfer/18 week problem you could simply leave out one of the 19 rounds.  For less than 18 players you will need to add rounds from a second round-robin to get upto to 18 weeks.  Finally note that if you leave out rounds from a round-robin with an odd number of players, you will upset the balance of the byes, so that some players get one more game than others.
