Title: 10 Person King of the Beach Volleyball tournament
Post by: kevinyyz on August 15, 2013, 11:59:32 AM
Hello Experts,

I've been trying to come up with a balance/fair schedule for a 10 person King of the beach (2 vs 2) volleyball tournament.

I need everyone to play with everyone ONCE and would like to have everyone play against everyone at least once or as close to an equal amount of times as possible.  The schedule I came up with had 1 person playing against the same guy 5 times out of 9 nine games which is not fair.

We would have 2 courts available but don't necesarily need to use both.  Rounds don't matter, we just need to run through until everyone gets to play with everyone once.  Person with the most wins at the end of the day in the KING!

Any suggestions or help would really help me from losing any more hair...lol

Thanks

There are no balanced solutions for your tournament, however it is possible to do better than you have described.  For example.

15 rounds
11 rounds

If you used the 11 round schedule and then added one final game with D&E  partnering another volunteer pair (their result would not count towards their final score), then at least you will have had all possible partners once.

Thank you so much. The 11 rounds will work just fine.

I have 1 more question.  Is it possible to have it scheduled so that players don't have back to back byes?

[(G H) : (A B)]    [(F J) : (C I)]     d,e
[(E F) : (G J)]      [(B C) : (H I)]   a,d
[(C F) : (A E)]     [(D J) : (B I)]    g,h
[(C G) : (B D)]    [(F I) : (E H)]    a,j
[(A D) : (I J)]      [(B G) : (F H)]   c,e
[(H J) : (D G)]     [(A I) : (B E)]    c,f
[(C J) : (E G)]     [(A H) : (D F)]    b,i
[(C E) : (D H)]    [(A F) : (B J)]     g,i
[(A G) : (E I)]     [(B F) : (C D)]    h,j
[(G I) : (A C)]     [(B H) : (E J)]    d,f
[(A J) : (C H)]     [(F G) : (D I)]    b,e
[D E) : (? ?)]

Thanks again

Just reorder the rows like this:

 [(G H) : (A B)]    [(F J) : (C I)]   d,e
 [(H J) : (D G)]    [(A I) : (B E)]   c,f
 [(C G) : (B D)]    [(F I) : (E H)]   a,j
 [(C F) : (A E)]    [(D J) : (B I)]   g,h
 [(C J) : (E G)]    [(A H) : (D F)]   b,i
 [(A D) : (I J)]    [(B G) : (F H)]   c,e
 [(G I) : (A C)]    [(B H) : (E J)]   d,f
 [(A G) : (E I)]    [(B F) : (C D)]   h,j
 [(C E) : (D H)]    [(A F) : (B J)]   g,i
 [(A J) : (C H)]    [(F G) : (D I)]   b,e
 [(E F) : (G J)]    [(B C) : (H I)]   a,d
 [(D E) : (? ?)]

Above I think there are at least three rounds of play between byes.
