Title: doubles tennis rotation help
Post by: MaryS on August 21, 2012, 02:57:23 PM
Please help.  I am trying to come up with a schedule for 6 couples playing tennis on 2 courts for 28 weeks (playing once a week).  Does anyone have good advice on how to do this?  Thanks

A little more information please.  Are you playing mixed doubles? (If yes, should playing with or against your spouse be allowed?)  Do the 8 people who play in one week have to be 4 of the couples?  (If yes, this complicates things a lot).

Not sure how to post but I would like help in figuring out how many matches it would require for 5 players to play with each player and against every combo of players in doubles. Is there a mathematical algorithm?

If you are playing ordinary doubles then you need to look for the Whist schedules.  The mathematics only work when there are 4n players or 4n+1 players.  If you follow the schedules link at the top of the page you can find the 4n schedules, a schedule for 5 players can be found here on the Wiseman web site (http://www.jdawiseman.com/papers/tournaments/individual-pairs/ip-pure_05.html).
