Title: Weird golf pairings needed
Post by: Cory on September 30, 2019, 04:23:20 PM
We have a golf outing comprising of six rounds but 3 of them will have 8 players and 3 will have only 7 players. I fully understand that pairings will not be equal in each player playing with each other player but is their a formula to maximize each player’s pairing with as many different players as possible?  Thanks for any efforts possible.

Thanks for your question.  What is your preferred format of play for each round?  When there are 8 players is it 4 singles?  When there are 7 players, is it 2 singles and a threesome?

For the first three days we will have two foursomes each day and the last three days we will have one foursome and one threesome each day.

I don't think any nice solutions to this can exist.  However I offer the following possibility:

(6 4 2 5) (1 3 7 8)
(3 5 4 1) (2 6 7 8)
(3 6 1 2) (4 5 7 8)
(1 2 5 7) (4 3 6)
(5 6 7 3) (4 1 2)
(7 3 2 4) (5 1 6)

where player 8 is the one who drops out after 3 days.  Perhaps there might be better possibilities, but in order to have everyone play each other at least once, and no more than three times, then I end up with 7 and 8 playing together in all of the 1st 3 rounds.
