Title: 10 Golfers 12 Rounds
Post by: golf4 on September 19, 2013, 05:16:17 PM
Looking to schedule 10 golfers over 12 rounds so everyone plays with everyone else the same number of times (or as close as possible).

The pairings can be 4,3,3 or 4,4,2 - whichever works best

I think the schedule below will work.  Pairs of players play together either 3 or 4 times.   Player numbers 2 & 10 have 4 foursomes and 8 threesomes, while all other players have 5 foursomes and 7 threesomes.

Hope that helps.

 ( 8  1  6  5) (3  2  9) ( 7 10  4)
 ( 9  8  4 10) (7  1  2) ( 5  3  6)
 ( 6  3  8  7) (1  2  4) (10  5  9)
 ( 1  9 10  5) (3  8  2) ( 7  6  4)
 ( 2 10  7  9) (8  6  5) ( 1  4  3)
 ( 5  7  1  3) (4  6  9) ( 2 10  8)
 (10  6  2  3) (5  4  9) ( 1  8  7)
 ( 6  9  1  7) (3 10  4) ( 8  2  5)
 ( 6  4  8  2) (7  5 10) ( 9  3  1)
 ( 2  5  4  1) (8  7  9) ( 6  3 10)
 ( 4  9  3  8) (1 10  6) ( 2  5  7)
 ( 4  3  5  7) (1  8 10) ( 6  2  9)

This is awesome - thank you!

Just in case I get pushback on the 3,3,4 is there a way to have balanced pairings using the 4, 4, 2 grouping?

Thanks again.

4,4,2 will probably seem more uneven given that some players will play twosome more times than others.  But here is a possible schedule:

  ( 9 10  8  5)  (6  3  7  2)  (1  4)
  ( 4  2  9  1)  (5 10  8  7)  (6  3)
  ( 8  7  1  6)  (5  4 10  3)  (9  2)
  (10  8  6  4)  (3  2  1  9)  (7  5)
  ( 3  7  9  4)  (6  2  5 10)  (8  1)
  ( 5  2  1  7)  (6  8  4  3)  (9 10)
  (10  1  7  3)  (9  5  8  4)  (6  2)
  ( 7 10  6  9)  (4  8  2  1)  (3  5)
  ( 5  3  8  2)  (1 10  9  6)  (4  7)
  ( 6  4  5  2)  (7  3  9  8)  (1 10)
  ( 3  1  6  5)  (2  7 10  4)  (8  9)
  (10  2  8  3)  (5  6  1  9)  (7  4)

Player numbers 1,4,7 & 9 have 3 twosomes and 9 foursomes, the other players have 2 twosomes and 10 foursomes.  So the former have a total of 30 playing partners (counting repeats), while the latter have 32 playing partners.
