Title: round robin scheduling
Post by: Ian-Douglas on August 19, 2014, 11:06:08 AM
As a non mathematician I'm struggling to organise a schedule for a golf tournament of 8 people playing 7 rounds
As well as playing each other once ( the easy bit  :) ) they will also be playing in a pairs competition, the difficulty arises in trying to make sure that the number of times they play in a 4 ball with any other individual is as equal as possible.
It seems to me that given the numbers it isn't possible to ensure this is possible but before I spend the next few days in a pointless exercise I would be delighted to know
a ) if I am correct and it is impossible to arrange
b ) if I am wrong and it can be done how do I do it ?
c ) if I am right but there is a ' best scenario' which minimises imbalance what is it ?

Apologies for my poor maths skills  :(

Ian

Ian,

Click on the 'Schedules' link near the top of this page and then bring up the whist schedule for 8 players.  I think this is what you are looking for as all pairs of players will oppose each other exactly twice.  You could randomize the order of the two 4-balls in each round so player 8 is not always in the first one.

Hope that helps,

Ian.
