Title: How old are the Berger RR tables?
Post by: wbport on May 26, 2008, 09:10:20 AM
I was looking into a google search someone had made to find my site and I came upon this (http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9E06E1DE1230E733A25751C1A9659C946397D6CF) from a 1902 tournament in Monte Carlo as reported in the NY Times.  It mentioned pairings were "being guided by the Berger tables," as if it were a new thing.  Does anyone know anything about the creator of the Berger tables?

TIA

P.S. I asked this same question on the US Chess (http://www.uschess.org) website and was told it was Johann Berger (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Berger).  In his day he was one of the top 20 chess players in the world and co-designed a RR tiebreak system.
